What is   Plant cell?

Plant cells are eukaryotic cells means the DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) in a plant cell is enclosed within the nucleus. The most important and distinctive structure of plant cell is the presence of the cell wall outside the cell membrane. It forms the outer lining of the cell. The cell wall mostly constitutes of cellulose and its main function is providing support and rigidity. Plants cells also contain many membranes-bound cellular structures. These organelles carry out specific functions necessary for survival and normal operation of the cells. There is a wide range of operations like producing hormones, enzymes, and all metabolic activities of the cell.


What is  Animal cell?

Animal cells are eukaryotic cell or cells with a membrane-bound nucleus. Unlike-prokaryotic, DNA(Deoxyribonucleic Acid)  in animal cells is housed within the  nucleus. In addition to having a nucleus, animal cells also contain other membrane-bound organelles, or tiny cellular structures, that carry out specific functions necessary for normal cellular operation.Organelles have a wide range of responsibilities that include everything from producing  hormones and enzymes to providing energy for animal cells.

The difference between plant and animal cell is very basic as well as important thing to know from the biological point of view. Plant and animal cell are similar in many ways as they both are eukaryotic cells. Since these are eukaryotic cells so they both have the cell membrane and cell organelles, like the nucleus, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum in common.

Now the key difference between plant and animal cell are-

  1. .A plant cell has the cell wall which is made of cellulose whereas animal cell doesn’t have cell wall.
  2. Another comparison can be made based on their shape. A plant cell has fixed rectangular shape whereas animal cell has generally round and irregular shape.
  3. A plant cell has one large shape vacuole which covers the large part of a cell, the animal cell has one or more vacuole which is much smaller then plant cell. The vacuole is generally a storage unit used to store water in the cell.
  4. The animal cell doesn’t have chloroplast. A plant cell has chloroplast as they make their own food by photosynthesis. It also imparts a green color to the plants.
  5. Nucleus lies on the one side of peripheral cytoplasm in plant cell whereas nucleus lies in the center of the animal cell.
  6.  Centrioles are present in the animal cell and are usually absent in plant cell.Centrioles help in the formation of the spindle fibers that separate the chromosomes during cell division (mitosis).

Observing the difference between the animal cell and plant under the microscope (laboratory test)

When we observed onion skin cell (plant cell), we found out that the cells of the  onion is more or less brick shaped and the cells have small dots int it(nucleus) , which is easily detectable under the microscope.But as we increased the magnification  values from 10x to 100x to 400x the nuclei of the individual cells was clearly visible.

When we observed check cell (animal cell), we found out that the check cell was round in shape  and the cells have small dots int it(nucleus) which is easily detectable under the microscope.But the animal cells were loosely filled and secluded from one another ,this was due to the improper cell wall

But as we increased the magnification values from 10x to 100x to 400x ,the single cell was easily detectable,since all cells are secluded from each other so we could only see one cell at a time (under 400x zoom)


The major differences between the animal cells and plant cell are covered in the above section. But the most prominent difference between the animal cell and plant cell is the absence of cell wall in the animal cell. With the other distinctive difference is the presence of nucleus in the center of the cell in an animal cell while same nucleus is present one side of peripheral cytoplasm.



  1. Your pictures at the top are very misleading. It’s not even of cells, yet it’s a close up pattern that is the opposite of the nature of the cell. Plant cells are more geometric and animal cells are more organic.

  2. the picture is not like the original cell……it’s missing part like lysosome etc. and is not very heplful to make use of it.
